Standard Azerbaijani (Azərbaycan ədəbi dili) from zero to A1, taught in English: letters and sounds — ə, ı, ö, ü, q and ğ, vowel harmony and stress; meeting people with sən and siz, personal endings, negation and questions, countries and numbers. Module 0. Letters and sounds

Lesson 1. The alphabet and the vowels: ə, ı, ö, ü

13 exercises · I can name an Azerbaijani letter the way it's said when spelling a word aloud, tell ə from e, ı from i, ö from o, and ü from u by ear, and type any word even without an Azerbaijani keyboard.

Lesson 2. Tricky consonants: q, k, g, ğ, x, h, c, ç, j

13 exercises · I can read c as the j of “jam”, ç as the ch of “church”, x as the ch of Scottish “loch”, h as a light breath, q as a voiced g from the back of the mouth, ğ as a soft gargled g — and not spell a word the Turkish way: qız, not kız.

Lesson 3. Vowel harmony: -lar / -lər and -dır / -dir / -dur / -dür

11 exercises · I can add the ending -lar or -lər and -dır, -dir, -dur, or -dür to any word by looking at its last vowel — and not slip up on words like otaq, where the first vowel misleads.

Lesson 4. Stress and voicing: the last syllable, devoicing, final q and k

12 exercises · I can put the stress on the last syllable and not on -dır, hear [p] and [x] at the end of a word and still write b and q — and say “Təşəkkür edirəm” with ə as the a of “cat” and kk as [kg].

Module 1. Meeting people

Lesson 1. Salam! Greetings, “thank you”, sən and siz

16 exercises · I can say hello in the morning, afternoon, and evening, ask “how are you?” and answer, say thank you, apologize, and say goodbye — choosing sən or siz, bəli or hə by who I'm talking to.

Lesson 2. Mən tələbəyəm: personal pronouns and personal endings

17 exercises · I can say who I am and who is in front of me (“I'm a student”, “you're a teacher”, “we're friends”), introduce myself, and address someone with siz by first name with xanım or bəy.

Lesson 3. Tələbə deyiləm. Yorğunsan?: the negative deyil and questions with -mı

17 exercises · I can say who or what I'm NOT (“I'm not tired”, “he isn't married”), ask “are you hungry?”, “are you ready?” — with the particle -mı or by intonation alone — and give a short “yes” or “no” answer.

Lesson 4. Bu nədir? O kimdir?: the words for “this” and “that”, and the plural

15 exercises · I can ask “what's this?” and “who's this?” and answer “this is a notebook”, “that's a window”, “these are pupils”, choosing bu or o and adding -lar or -lər by vowel harmony.

Lesson 5. Haralısınız?: countries, inhabitants, and -lı

17 exercises · I can say where I'm from, my nationality, and where I live, ask “Haralısınız?”, and correct the person I'm talking to: “I'm not Turkish, I'm American.”

Lesson 6. Rəqəmlər: numbers 0–100, age, and phone numbers
