I can name parts of the body, say what hurts me, you, or someone else, and ask “What hurts?”
Başım ağrıyır: what hurts
Başım ağrıyır: what hurts
To tell a doctor or a friend what hurts, Azerbaijani says it as English does, “my head hurts”: the body part takes the possessive ending (my, your, his…) for the owner, and the verb is always in the third person: başım ağrıyır, başın ağrıyır, başı ağrıyır. You can add the pronoun: Mənim başım ağrıyır. If several things hurt, the verb stays the same: Gözlərim ağrıyır.
Before the vowel of the ending, the same changes as in module 2: q → ğ — qulağım, barmağım; k → y — ürəyim; burun, ağız, qarın drop a vowel: burnum, ağzım, qarnım. Before a consonant nothing changes: burunları.
The question: Nəyiniz ağrıyır? (to siz), Nəyin ağrıyır? (to sən). “Doesn't hurt” is ağrımır.
əl is the hand, qol the whole arm from the shoulder; ayaq is both the leg and the foot.
Common mistakes:
• דMəndə baş ağrıyır” → Başım ağrıyır: not “I have a headache” with Məndə; the ending says whose.
• דMənim baş ağrıyır” → Mənim başım ağrıyır: the ending is required.
• דBaşım ağrıyıram” → Başım ağrıyır: the head hurts, not “I”.
Whose head, whose nose, whose heart + ağrıyır
The ending shows the owner; the verb ağrıyır doesn't change.
| Who | head | nose | heart |
|---|---|---|---|
| mən (I) | başım | burnum | ürəyim |
| sən (you, informal) | başın | burnun | ürəyin |
| o (he, she) | başı | burnu | ürəyi |
| biz (we) | başımız | burnumuz | ürəyimiz |
| siz (you, formal or plural) | başınız | burnunuz | ürəyiniz |
| onlar (they) | başları | burunları | ürəkləri |
