Good wishes: the occasion + mübarək

Good wishes: the occasion + mübarək

Good wishes in Azerbaijani are simple: the occasion + the ending “your” + mübarək. The occasion comes first, mübarək last; the phrase has no word for “happy”. The forms are in the table. • The “your” ending for siz follows the last vowel: after a, ı — ınız (bayramınız), after e, ə, i — iniz (Yeni iliniz), after o, u — unuz, after ö, ü — ünüz (ad gününüz). For sən: bayramın, Yeni ilin, ad günün. • Təbrik edirəm — “congratulations” — fits any occasion. To wish good luck: uğurlar. Novruz is the spring holiday, March 20–21. On the table: səməni (sprouted wheat) and the sweets paxlava and şəkərbura. Yeni il is the New Year. A gift is hədiyyə. “For whom”: üçün after mən, sən, o, biz, siz in the genitive: mənim üçün, sənin üçün, onun üçün, bizim üçün, sizin üçün. But: onlar üçün (no genitive). Common mistakes: • ×Xoşbəxt ad günü! (as in English “Happy birthday!”) → the occasion + the ending + mübarək: Ad gününüz mübarək! • ×sən üçün → sənin üçün.
The occasion + “your”, informal or formal

Then comes mübarək.
