I can buy fruit and vegetables at the bazaar by weight and by the piece, ask the price and whether they're fresh, ask for a discount, and in a store pay by card or in cash and take a bag and a receipt.
At the bazaar and the store
At the bazaar and the store
At the bazaar you buy fruit and vegetables by weight — yarım kilo, bir kilo — or by the piece: üç dənə. After a number, neçə and bir neçə the word has no -lar (module 1). Ask the price with “… neçəyədir?”; the seller gives the price per kilo: kilosu … manat. Is it fresh? “Təzədir?” The seller asks: “Başqa nə lazımdır?” — “Anything else?”
To ask for a discount at the bazaar, use one phrase: “Bir az ucuz olar?” — “Can it be a little cheaper?” (olar is “may, can”, module 5). In a store there's no bargaining: you pay at the register (kassa) in cash, nağd, or by card, kartla, like avtobusla. At the register you'll hear “Paket lazımdır?”: bags cost extra. The receipt is qəbz; take it with you. You get cash from an ATM, bankomat.
A particular item (this one, that one) takes the accusative (module 5): bu armudu, o soğanı; after a vowel, with n: bu meyvəni. The vowel follows the last vowel of the word: a, ı → -ı; e, ə, i → -i; o, u → -u; ö, ü → -ü. In a word of two or more syllables a final k becomes y before a vowel: çörəyi; one-syllable bank keeps its k, and paket ends in t (see the form in parentheses). The checker doesn't tell ı from i or u from ü: watch the vowel yourself.
Common mistakes:
• ×beş kilo soğanlar → beş kilo soğan.
• ×çörəki → çörəyi.
• ×armudı → armudu (the last vowel is u).
How much, and how we pay
After a number the word has no -lar: üç dənə nar, iki kilo soğan.
