I can say who I am and who is in front of me (“I'm a student”, “you're a teacher”, “we're friends”), introduce myself, and address someone with siz by first name with xanım or bəy.
Mən tələbəyəm: an ending instead of “to be”
Mən tələbəyəm: an ending instead of “to be”
Pronouns: mən “I”, sən “you” (informal), o “he, she” (no gender), biz “we”, siz “you” (formal, or to several people), onlar “they”.
English needs “am” and “a”: “I'm a student”. Azerbaijani has a personal ending instead, required in the first and second person: Mən tələbəyəm, Sən müəllimsən. Its form follows vowel harmony (see the tables). After a vowel, “I” and “we” add a linking y: tələbəyik. “We”: after e, ə, i — -ik; after a, ı — -ıq; after o, u — -uq; after ö, ü — -ük: müəllimik, dostuq.
“He, she” is -dır (-dir, -dur, -dür). In speech it's often dropped, but in exercises on this ending always write it. For onlar: -dırlar or just -dır. The ending is unstressed: the stress is on the syllable before it (müəllimdir).
You can leave out the pronoun — the ending already says who: Tələbəyəm. “Too” is da or də after the word, by its last vowel: Biz də …, Orxan da … “And you?” is Bəs siz? The word insan: “person, people in general”.
Formal address: the first name + xanım / bəy / müəllim — Nigar xanım, Tural bəy; müəllim is also said to any educated man. With such a title, only siz.
Common mistakes:
• NOT “Sən müəllim.” → Sən müəllimsən.
• NOT “Mən tələbəəm.” → the linking y: tələbəyəm.
• NOT “xanım Nigar” → Nigar xanım; NOT “Nigar xanım, necəsən?” → necəsiniz?
• NOT “Nigar hanım” → xanım (hanım is the Turkish spelling).
Personal endings
The form of the ending is chosen by the last vowel of the word; after a vowel, “I” and “we” get the linking y.
| Person | qadın: ends in a consonant, back vowel | müəllim: ends in a consonant, front vowel | tələbə: ends in a vowel |
|---|---|---|---|
| mən (I) | qadınam | müəlliməm | tələbəyəm |
| sən (you, informal) | qadınsan | müəllimsən | tələbəsən |
| o (he, she) | qadındır | müəllimdir | tələbədir |
| biz (we) | qadınıq | müəllimik | tələbəyik |
| siz (you, formal or plural) | qadınsınız | müəllimsiniz | tələbəsiniz |
| onlar (they) | qadındırlar | müəllimdirlər | tələbədirlər |
The last vowel picks the form
Look at the last vowel of the word, not the first.
| The last vowel | he, she | we (after a consonant) | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| a, ı | -dır | -ıq | oğlandır |
| e, ə, i | -dir | -ik | kişidir |
| o, u | -dur | -uq | dostdur |
| ö, ü | -dür | -ük | gözdür |
