Tea the Baku way: the table, the order, and the check
At a çayxana (a teahouse) tea is drunk from the small pear-shaped glass, armudu stəkan, not from a cup (fincan). With the tea comes qənd, lump sugar: you bite it and sip the tea; you don't put it in the glass. Granulated sugar is şəkər. Also with tea: mürəbbə (jam) and limon; the tea itself comes in a teapot, çaydan.
The owner or the waiter asks: “Nə içirsiniz?” — “What would you like to drink?” Order as in a restaurant (module 5): “Mənə … verin”, “… istəyirəm”. “One more” is bir … da / də, after the word: da if the last vowel is a, ı, o, u; də if it is e, ə, i, ö, ü: bir stəkan da, bir boşqab da. Use siz with the owner and the waiter: gətirin, verin, oturun. At the end: “Hesab, zəhmət olmasa”.
What you eat with takes the same ending -la / -lə as avtobusla: qaşıqla, çəngəllə, bıçaqla. q doesn't change before a consonant: qaşıqla, but qaşığı (ğ only before a vowel, module 2). No fork or spoon? Say “Mənə … lazımdır”: the person who needs takes the dative (module 4).
Common mistakes:
• ×Mən … lazımdır → Mənə … lazımdır.
• ×qaşığla → qaşıqla.
• ×Tural bəy, bizə su gətir! → … gətirin (to an older person, siz).
