I can say what I do for a living and where I study — Mən mühəndisəm, Mühasib işləyirəm, Universitetdə oxuyuram — and ask: Nə işləyirsiniz?
What do you do for a living?
What do you do for a living?
Why: say what you do for a living and ask the other person.
There are three ways to talk about work (see the table):
• Mən həkiməm “I'm a doctor”: the job with a personal ending, like tələbəyəm, and no word for “a”;
• Həkim işləyirəm “I work as a doctor”: the job with no ending at all, before the verb;
• Universitetdə oxuyuram “I study at a university”: oxumaq means both “to read” and “to study”.
To ask: Nə işləyirsiniz? Peşəniz nədir?
Common mistakes:
• ×Mən işləyirəm həkim → Həkim işləyirəm: the job comes first, the verb last;
• ×Mən həkim → Mən həkiməm: the personal ending is required.
The endings -çı / -çi / -çu / -çü and -ıcı / -ici / -ucu / -ücü often mean “someone who does it”: təqaüdçü “retiree”, proqramçı “programmer”.
Azerbaijani has no grammatical gender: müəllim is any teacher, polis is a man or a woman. But a few words have a special form for women: müəllimə. You address a woman teacher by her first name + müəllimə or her first name + xanım: the title goes after the name.
How to talk about your job
Before işləyirəm the job takes no ending at all.
| What to say | In Azerbaijani | Translation |

| work as | Aşpaz işləyirəm. | I work as a cook. |

| to ask | Nə işləyirsiniz? Peşəniz nədir? | What do you do for a living? What's your job? |
