I can say I'm sick and have a fever, understand a doctor's advice “drink” and “don't drink”, tell a friend, or politely a stranger, not to do something, and ask for help.
Xəstəyəm: “don't drink”, “don't go out”
Xəstəyəm: “don't drink”, “don't go out”
The doctor gives advice and says what not to do, and you'll say “don't” to a friend and, politely, to a stranger. The command to sən is the stem (iç!), to siz the stem + -(y)ın (için!): you know this from module 4.
“Don't” to sən: the stem + -ma / -mə by vowel harmony: içmə, çıxma. To siz: -mayın / -məyin, with a linking y before -ın: içməyin, çıxmayın. t before m doesn't change: getməyin. The stress is on the syllable before -ma; -ma itself is unstressed.
kömək etmək is “to help”; the person you help takes the dative, unlike English “help me”: Mənə kömək edin! (t → d, as in gedin).
About yourself: Xəstəyəm. Qızdırmam var — “I have a fever”, like Mənim bacım var. dərman is “medicine”.
Common mistakes:
• דYox için!” → İçməyin!: English “don't” is not a separate word here.
• דİçmirsiniz!” → İçməyin!: içmirsiniz is “you don't drink”, not a command.
• דRəşad bəy, getmə!” → Rəşad bəy, getməyin!: with bəy, always siz.
“Don't”: informal and formal
