I can order a dish and a drink in a café, say what I want and what I need, and ask for the check.
Want and need: istəyirəm, lazımdır
Want and need: istəyirəm, lazımdır
I want something: the word + istəyirəm. A definite thing takes the ending, as in lesson 1; a thing in general doesn't. I want to do something: the infinitive in -maq / -mək + istəyirəm. “Yemək yemək istəyirəm” — “I want to eat”: the first yemək is “food”, the second “to eat”.
I need: to whom + what + lazımdır: “Mənə … lazımdır”. English “I need” has the person as the subject; Azerbaijani puts the person in the dative — the same mənə, sənə, ona, bizə, sizə, onlara as for “where to?”. Don't need — lazım deyil; need? — lazımdır?
In a café: “Bu stol boşdur?” — is the table free? “Mənə … verin” — give me (the imperative + to whom). The check: “Hesab, zəhmət olmasa”. Hungry — ac, full — tox. Qutab — a thin flatbread with a filling.
kabab is kebab grilled on a skewer; şorba is any soup.
Common mistakes:
• ×Mən su lazımdır — the person who needs takes the dative: Mənə su lazımdır
• ×Mənə çay istəyirəm — istəyirəm has a normal subject, no dative: Çay istəyirəm
• ×İstəyirəm içmək çay — the verb comes last: Çay içmək istəyirəm
What I want
istəyirəm goes at the end; before it comes the thing or the action.
| What I want | Example |
|---|---|
| something in general | Toyuq istəyirəm. |
| a definite thing | Bu salatı istəyirəm. |
| to do something | Çay içmək istəyirəm. |
| “I want to eat” | Yemək yemək istəyirəm. |
I need
The person who needs takes the “where to?” ending (the dative); the thing needed takes no ending.
| To whom | + | − | ? |
|---|---|---|---|
| mənə | … lazımdır | … lazım deyil | … lazımdır? |
| sənə | … lazımdır | … lazım deyil | … lazımdır? |
| ona | … lazımdır | … lazım deyil | … lazımdır? |
| bizə | … lazımdır | … lazım deyil | … lazımdır? |
| sizə | … lazımdır | … lazım deyil | … lazımdır? |
| onlara | … lazımdır | … lazım deyil | … lazımdır? |
