Evim: rooms, furniture, and floors

Evim: rooms, furniture, and floors

This lesson is about the apartment: rooms and things, floors, what is where, and what to tell the landlord when something doesn't work. yataq otağı is “room for sleeping” (bedroom), qonaq otağı “room for guests” (living room). The floor is an ordinal number + the locative: üçüncü mərtəbədə — “on the third floor”. Floors are counted as in the US: birinci mərtəbə is the first floor, at street level. To say what is where, use the place words from module 4: stolun üstündə, çarpayının altında, şkafın içində. açmaq is “to open” and “to turn on” (the light, the TV), bağlamaq “to close”. A definite thing takes the accusative: pəncərəni açın, işığı açın (q → ğ). “There's no hot water” is the set phrase İsti su gəlmir (literally “hot water doesn't come”). bütün is “all, the whole”: bütün otaqlar. Recognition only (no need to write them): paltaryuyan “washing machine”, divar “wall”, mebel “furniture”, təmiz “clean”, çirkli “dirty”, təmizləmək “to clean”. Common mistakes: • דüstündə stolun” → stolun üstündə: the place word comes after, unlike English “on the table”. • דikinci mərtəbə yaşayıram” → ikinci mərtəbədə yaşayıram. • דişıqı açın” → işığı açın.
