I can ask and say where I am and where a place is — at the bank, in the park, at the market, at home — say what is where, and not confuse “I have a brother” (Mənim qardaşım var) with “I have a pen with me” (Məndə qələm var).
Harada? The locative: -da / -də
Harada? The locative: -da / -də
English “in, at, on” before a word become an ending after it: -da or -də, the locative. It answers “where?”.
The form follows the last vowel: after a, ı, o, u — -da; after e, ə, i, ö, ü — -də. Evdə “at home”, işdə “at work”, Bakıda “in Baku”. After a vowel nothing is added: Gəncədə. “Bakıda yaşayıram” is Bakı + -da.
Where? — harada; here — burada, there — orada (bura, ora + -da). The question word stands where the answer goes: “Sən haradasan?”
A place can be the predicate, with a personal ending from module 1: evdəyəm “I'm at home” (see the table); after -da / -də the endings -am / -ıq take a linking y: evdəyəm, parkdayıq. In the first and second person the ending is required; in the negative it moves to deyil: “Evdə deyiləm”. “What is where” takes var and yoxdur: “Şəhərdə çox park var”.
Pronouns: məndə, səndə, onda, bizdə…; bu and o add an n: bunda, onda. For “I have”, “Məndə qələm var” is only for a thing on you now; family and what you own take Mənim, as in module 2: “Mənim bacım var”.
The word market is a small grocery store, not a supermarket; bazar is an open-air market, a bazaar (and Sunday, lesson 4). No apostrophe: Bakıda, not Turkish Bakı'da.
Common mistakes:
• × “da Bakı” → Bakıda.
• × “Biz parkda” → Biz parkdayıq.
• × “Harada sən?” → Sən haradasan?
• × “Məndə bacı var” → Mənim bacım var.
Where? The ending -da / -də
The ending is chosen by the last vowel of the word; after a vowel there's no linking letter.
| Word | Where? | In English |
|---|---|---|
| ev | evdə | at home |
| iş | işdə | at work |
| şəhər | şəhərdə | in the city |
| Bakı | Bakıda | in Baku |
| Gəncə | Gəncədə | in Ganja |
| bura | burada | here |
| ora | orada | there |
Where am I? A place with a personal ending
In the first and second person the personal ending is required; in the third person you can leave out -dır.
| Person | At home |
|---|---|
| mən (I) | evdəyəm |
| sən (you, informal) | evdəsən |
| o (he, she) | evdədir |
| biz (we) | evdəyik |
| siz (you, formal or plural) | evdəsiniz |
| onlar (they) | evdədirlər |
On whom? Pronouns with -da / -də
Məndə … var is only about something on you now; your own things and family take Mənim … var.
| Who | On whom |
|---|---|
| mən | məndə |
| sən | səndə |
| o | onda |
| biz | bizdə |
| siz | sizdə |
| onlar | onlarda |
| bu | bunda |
| I have a sister (family, your own) | Mənim bacım var |
| I have a pen with me (something on you) | Məndə qələm var |
