Lesson 3. Tələbə deyiləm. Yorğunsan?: the negative deyil and questions with -mı
I can say who or what I'm NOT (“I'm not tired”, “he isn't married”), ask “are you hungry?”, “are you ready?” — with the particle -mı or by intonation alone — and give a short “yes” or “no” answer.
Deyil and -mı: “not” and the question
Deyil and -mı: “not” and the question
To say “I'm not …”, put the word deyil after the word, and the personal ending moves onto it: yorğun deyiləm, deyilsən, deyilik, deyilsiniz. In the third person just deyil, without -dır; for onlar, deyil or deyillər.
English asks by inverting (“Are you tired?”); Azerbaijani keeps the order and adds the question particle -mı (-mi, -mu, -mü by vowel harmony) at the very end, after the personal ending, written joined: yorğunsanmı? In the third person -dırmı? or just -mı?: Orxan gəncdirmi? For onlar, -dırlarmı? or -dırmı?, -mı? You can also ask without the particle, by intonation alone: the voice rises on the last syllable, as in an English yes/no question: Yorğunsan?
Short answers: Bəli, gəncəm. / Xeyr, gənc deyiləm. A negative question is deyil + the personal ending + -mı: Yorğun deyilsənmi? “Aren't you tired?” The particle -mı and the word deyil are unstressed. The word xoşbəxt means “happy”.
Common mistakes:
• NOT “Mı sən tələbəsən?” → the particle goes at the end: Sən tələbəsənmi?
• NOT “Sən tələbəsən mi?” → joined: tələbəsənmi (Turkish writes it apart).
• NOT “Mən tələbə yox.” → Mən tələbə deyiləm.
• NOT “Mən deyiləm tələbə.” → deyil goes after the word: tələbə deyiləm.
Yes, no, question: hazır “ready”
After deyil the personal ending moves onto it; -mı goes at the very end and is written joined.
| Person | + | − | ? |
|---|---|---|---|
| mən (I) | hazıram | hazır deyiləm | hazırammı? |
| sən (you, informal) | hazırsan | hazır deyilsən | hazırsanmı? |
| o (he, she) | hazırdır | hazır deyil | hazırdırmı? hazırmı? |
| biz (we) | hazırıq | hazır deyilik | hazırıqmı? |
| siz (you, formal or plural) | hazırsınız | hazır deyilsiniz | hazırsınızmı? |
| onlar (they) | hazırdırlar | hazır deyillər | hazırdırlarmı? |
Four forms of -mı
The form of the particle is chosen by the last vowel before it.
| The last vowel | Particle | Example |
|---|---|---|
| a, ı | -mı | subaysanmı? |
| e, ə, i | -mi | tələbəsənmi? |
| o, u | -mu | məşğulsunuzmu? |
| ö, ü | -mü | gözdürmü? |
