Modul 0. Letters and sounds

Lesson 1. The alphabet, long and short vowels

10 exercises · I can say any letter of the German alphabet by its German name, write down a word or a last name spelled out to me, and tell from the spelling whether a vowel is long or short.

Lesson 2. The umlauts ä, ö, ü, diphthongs, and ß

12 exercises · I can read aloud a word with ä, ö, ü, ei, au, eu, or äu without replacing them with English “oo”, “oh”, or “ay”, explain why one word has ß and another ss, and spell out a word with an umlaut in German.

Lesson 3. Consonants, stress, and sentence melody

16 exercises · I can say hello and goodbye in German at any time of day, introduce myself, and use any form of sein to say who is who — and also negate it and ask about it.

Lesson 2. The present tense and word order: who does what

17 exercises · I can talk about a person with six common verbs — their name, where they're from, where they live and work, what they're learning — ask about it, and build a negative sentence.

Lesson 3. Der, die, das: noun gender and personal details

14 exercises · I can say any noun together with its article, without guessing the gender from the meaning, and fill in a simple form: first name, last name, address, city, country, language, phone number.

Lesson 4. The verb haben, numbers 0–100, and age

18 exercises · I can say and write out in words any number from zero to a hundred, say how old I am and how old someone else is, and use haben to say what someone has.

Lesson 3. How much: measures, packages, and prices
