Lesson 2. The present tense and word order: who does what

I can talk about a person with six common verbs — their name, where they're from, where they live and work, what they're learning — ask about it, and build a negative sentence.

The verb in second place: how to build a German sentence

Verb endings: English adds only -s (he lives); German has an ending for every person. All forms are in the first table. Spelling. Stems in t or d add an e before the ending: du arbeitest, er arbeitet. With a stem in ß, du adds only -t, not -st: du heißt. The verb comes second. If position 1 isn't the subject, the subject moves right after the verb: Jetzt lerne ich Deutsch. Yes/no question: verb first, then the subject, no “do”: Wohnst du hier? The voice rises. W-question: the question word first (five are in the table), the verb second — Wo arbeitest du? The voice falls. Careful: wer is “who”; “where” is wo. And “What's your name?” is Wie heißt du? nicht goes at the end (Lukas arbeitet nicht.) or right before what it negates (Emma arbeitet nicht in Leipzig.). Two set phrases: aus + country = where someone is from (Ich komme aus Russland); in + city or country = where they live (Ich wohne in Hamburg). Countries take no article; a language is one word: Ich lerne Deutsch. In German, Vienna is Wien, Munich is München, Cologne is Köln. Common mistakes: • NOT “Jetzt ich lerne Deutsch” — Jetzt lerne ich Deutsch. • NOT “Du arbeitst hier” — Du arbeitest hier. • NOT “Wo du wohnst?” — Wo wohnst du? • NOT “Ich nicht arbeite” — Ich arbeite nicht. • NOT “Ich komme von Russland” — Ich komme aus Russland. • NOT “Ich lerne Deutschland” — Ich lerne Deutsch.
