The apartment, furniture, and colors: where things are

The apartment, furniture, and colors: where things are

Describing your home and saying what you like is a first conversation with a neighbor or a landlord. Room names are often two words in one: das Schlafzimmer, das Wohnzimmer. The last part gives the gender (das Zimmer), the first part takes the stress. Where things are: set phrases, in the first table: in der Küche, im Bad, im Wohnzimmer, im Schlafzimmer, im Garten, auf dem Tisch, unter dem Bett, im Schrank. The reason for these endings comes at the next level. The verb with them is stehen. A color goes after the verb sein, and there the adjective doesn't change: Der Garten ist grün. In the plural only the verb changes: Die Balkone sind grau. If the adjective goes BEFORE the noun, it takes an ending (“die gelbe Lampe”); that's the next level, not for now. “I like it” is a set phrase: Das gefällt mir. Das Wohnzimmer gefällt mir. Question: Wie gefällt dir der Garten? The order is the reverse of English: what you like is the subject (literally “it pleases me”), mir is “to me”, dir is “to you” (informal). Common mistakes: • NOT “Die Lampe ist gelbe” — after ist, no ending. • NOT “Das Sofa steht in die Küche” — where? — in der Küche. • NOT “Ich gefalle die Wohnung” — correct: Die Wohnung gefällt mir. • NOT “Die Wohnung gefällt mich” — here it's mir. • NOT “Die Stühle sind braune” — in the plural, after sind, no ending either.
Where things are — set phrases

Why the endings look like this comes at the next level; for now, learn them as a whole.
