Lesson 4. ihn, sie, es: pronouns in the accusative

I can avoid repeating a noun: replace it with ihn, sie, or es by its German article, give a short answer in a store, and say “I know you” and “we're looking for you”.

ihn, sie, es: a word instead of the noun

ihn, sie, es: a word instead of the noun

To avoid saying a noun twice, replace it with a pronoun: Der Käse ist frisch. Ich nehme ihn. The forms are in the table: ich → mich, du → dich, er → ihn, sie → sie, es → es, wir → uns, ihr → euch, sie (they) → sie, Sie (formal) → Sie. Five forms change: ich → mich, du → dich, er → ihn, wir → uns, ihr → euch; sie, es, and formal Sie stay as in the nominative. ihn is like he → him; dich is new, because English “you” never changes. The main rule: the GERMAN article decides, not English “it”. der Saft → ihn, die Milch → sie, das Brot → es, plural die Äpfel → sie. English says “it” for the first three. Position: the pronoun comes right after the verb — Ich kaufe ihn. In a question, after the subject: Kaufst du ihn? Negation: nicht at the end — Ich kaufe ihn nicht. Formal Sie stays Sie in the accusative, with a capital: Herr Weber, ich kenne Sie. mich, dich, uns, euch are about people: Emma sucht mich. Felix kennt dich. nehmen changes its stem, like essen: du nimmst, er nimmt. Common mistakes: • NOT “Ich nehme er” — the accusative is ihn. • NOT “Der Kuchen? Ich nehme es” — with der, it's ihn. • NOT “Ich kenne du” — correct: Ich kenne dich. • NOT “Du nehmst den Saft” — correct: Du nimmst den Saft. • NOT “Ich kaufe nicht ihn” — nicht goes at the end.
Personal pronouns in the accusative

The German article decides the form, not English “it”.
