haben, numbers, and age

haben, numbers, and age

The verb haben means “to have”, as in English: Ich habe die Adresse. The forms are in the table. With du and er, the b of the stem drops out: du hast, er hat, not “du habst”. In this lesson, haben takes die- and das-words: die Adresse, die Nummer, das Telefon, das Buch. With der-words, the article changes: that's module 3. Numbers 0–12 are in the second table: learn them whole. From 13 to 19: the number + zehn: dreizehn, vierzehn, achtzehn. Two traps: sechs loses its s — sechzehn; sieben loses its en — siebzehn. The tens end in -zig: vierzig, fünfzig, neunzig. Only dreißig is spelled with ß, and sechzig and siebzig lose the same letters as sechzehn and siebzehn. From 21 to 99, the number goes “backwards”, in one word: the ones, und, then the tens, like old English “four-and-twenty”: einundzwanzig, zweiunddreißig. No spaces inside, and eins loses its -s. Age takes sein, not haben, as in English: Wie alt bist du? — Ich bin zwanzig Jahre alt. Shorter: Ich bin zwanzig. Jahre is plural; how plurals are formed comes in module 4. Common mistakes: • NOT “Ich habe zwanzig Jahre” — Ich bin zwanzig Jahre alt. • NOT “Wie alt hast du?” — Wie alt bist du? • NOT “Du habst die Nummer” — Du hast die Nummer. • NOT “einsundzwanzig” and NOT “zwanzig eins” — einundzwanzig. • NOT “sechszehn” — sechzehn.
The verb haben in the present tense

With du and er, the b drops out of the stem: du hast, er hat.
