I can ask the way to the train station, buy a one-way or round-trip ticket, understand which track the train leaves from and where I need to change trains, and say that the train is late.
Directions, the station ticket counter, and train announcements
From the street to the right track
Four steps: the way, the ticket, the track, changing trains.
The way: Wie komme ich zum Bahnhof? The answer uses Sie: Gehen Sie geradeaus und dann links. Or: Nehmen Sie die U-Bahn.
The ticket: Einmal nach Köln, bitte — “one ticket to Cologne.” The clerk asks: einfach (one-way) or hin und zurück (round trip). Or use a machine: der Fahrkartenautomat (stress on the first part).
The train. The prefix goes to the end: Der Bus fährt um acht Uhr ab. Wir kommen um zwölf Uhr an. The track (das Gleis) has no article: von Gleis sieben.
Changing trains: In Bonn müssen Sie umsteigen. After müssen, the infinitive goes to the end.
Delays. English “is five minutes late” becomes hat … Verspätung, with the number first: Der Bus hat fünf Minuten Verspätung.
Also useful: der Fahrplan, der Ausgang, der Bahnsteig, die Auskunft, der Schalter (ticket window).
Common mistakes:
• NOT “Ich fahre ab um neun Uhr” — the prefix goes to the end: Ich fahre um neun Uhr ab.
• NOT “Wir müssen umsteigen in Bonn” — correct: Wir müssen in Bonn umsteigen.
• NOT “Der Bus hat Verspätung fünf Minuten” — the number comes first.
• NOT “Wann der Zug fährt ab?” — correct: Wann fährt der Zug ab?
• NOT “eine Fahrkarte zu Köln” — to a city: eine Fahrkarte nach Köln.
Letters: ei in Gleis — [aɪ̯], “eye”; ie in sieben — long [iː]; g at the end of Zug — [k]; ah in Fahrplan — long [aː]; z in Zug — [ts].

Two ticket-counter words and one set request.
