I can fill out and sign a form, buy a stamp and send a package at the post office, give my account and card details at the bank — and ask someone to repeat something or spell it out when I don't catch it.
Formular, Post und Bank
Paperwork, the post office, and the bank
Forms are everywhere in Germany. You already know Vorname, Familienname, Straße, and Telefon.
ausfüllen, stressed ÁUSfüllen, is separable, like English “fill it out”: Emma füllt das Formular aus. unterschreiben, stressed unterSCHRÉIben, is inseparable (the prefix stays): Emma unterschreibt das Formular.
At the post office: die Briefmarke — stamp, das Paket — package. Lisa kauft eine Briefmarke und schickt den Brief nach Leipzig. At the bank: das Konto — account, die Bankkarte — bank card.
Lifesaver phrases:
• Wie bitte? — you didn't catch it.
• Können Sie das buchstabieren? — ask them to spell it out.
• Ich weiß nicht. — you don't have an answer. weiß is a form of wissen; more at the next level.
• Ich verstehe nicht. — you didn't understand at all.
• Sprechen Sie bitte langsam. — ask them to speak slowly.
• Können Sie mir helfen? — ask for help; mir is a set form of the dative (Dativ).
One word, two meanings: die Bank is a bank and a bench. In this lesson it's always a bank.
Common mistakes:
• NOT “Ich ausfülle das Formular” — correct: Ich fülle das Formular aus.
• NOT “Ich unterschreibe hier unter” — correct: Ich unterschreibe hier.
• NOT “Ich weiß nicht das” — correct: Ich weiß nicht.
Letters: ie in Brief — a long [iː], as in “see”; ei in meine — [aɪ̯], as in “eye”; ß in weiß — a sharp [s].
