I can say where I was yesterday and what I had, ask the person I'm talking to about it, and tell from gestern or früher that the past form is needed.
Yesterday: war and hatte
Yesterday: war and hatte
German talks about yesterday in a past tense. The main one comes in the next module, but sein and haben, the two most frequent verbs, have a short past form used everywhere, in speech and in writing: war (“was”) and hatte (“had”).
Words that call for this form: gestern, gestern Morgen, gestern Abend, vorgestern, früher. Compare: Heute ist der Kaffee teuer. Gestern war er billig.
The forms are in the table. ich and er/sie/es share one form, as with mögen and können: ich war, er war. Then: du warst, ihr wart, ich hatte, du hattest, ihr hattet.
Word order doesn't change: the verb comes second. Gestern war ich in München. Ich hatte gestern kein Geld.
Negation as usual, with nicht or kein: Ich war nicht in Berlin. Wir hatten keinen Hunger.
Questions: Warst du gestern in München? Wo warst du? Was hattest du?
What goes with what: tiredness, illness, and places take war (Ich war müde). Hunger, thirst, time, and money take hatte (Ich hatte Hunger), although English says “I was hungry”.
Common mistakes:
• NOT “Gestern ich hatte Zeit” — verb second: Gestern hatte ich Zeit.
• NOT “Ich habte Hunger” — correct: Ich hatte Hunger.
• NOT “Ich war Hunger” — hunger goes with haben.
• NOT “Ich bin gestern in Berlin” — with gestern you need war.
• NOT “Du warst nicht kein Geld” — either Du hattest kein Geld or Du warst nicht hier.
war and hatte: the past of sein and haben
ich and er/sie/es have the same form — as with mögen and können.
| Subject | sein → war | haben → hatte |
|---|---|---|
| ich | war | hatte |
| du | warst | hattest |
| er · sie · es | war | hatte |
| wir | waren | hatten |
| ihr | wart | hattet |
| sie · Sie | waren | hatten |
