I can say what I don't do and don't understand, ask “Do you speak Kazakh?”, and ask someone to repeat: Қайталаңызшы.
I don't. Do you? Negatives and questions
I don't. Do you? Negatives and questions
Why: to say what you don't do or don't understand, and to ask yes / no questions.
The “not” goes inside the verb: stem + -ма + й + personal ending. Six forms (see the table):
• after a vowel and р, л, й, у — -ма / -ме: тұрмаймын, сөйлемеймін;
• after м, н, ң, з, ж — -ба / -бе: жазбаймын, түсінбеймін;
• after a voiceless consonant — -па / -пе: айтпаймын.
This ending takes no stress.
A question needs no “do” and no change of order. The particle you know goes after the verb as a separate word: Сіз кітап оқисыз ба? In the “he, she” form -ды drops before the particle: Ол жазады → Ол жаза ма? With a question word there is no particle.
Ешкім “nobody” and ештеңе “nothing” always take a negative verb: Ешкім білмейді.
The word қазақша “in Kazakh” goes before the verb: сөйлеу, түсіну, оқу, жазу, білу. The name қазақ тілі has two words: the first has no ending, the second has the “his / her” ending. “I'm learning Kazakh” is a set phrase: қазақ тілін үйренемін.
Requests are set phrases too: Қайталаңызшы. Ақырын айтыңызшы.
Common mistakes:
• ×сөйлеймін емес → сөйлемеймін;
• ×Кім орысша біледі ме? → Кім орысша біледі?;
• ×қазақ тіл → қазақ тілі.
