Try on, return, exchange

A clothing store: three steps

Three steps: find your size, try it on, and — if it doesn't fit — return it or exchange it with the receipt. Size. English “size” is la talla for clothes, el número for shoes. To ask for something in the window: “He visto esos zapatos en el escaparate.” Trying on. probarse is reflexive, like ducharse, and changes o→ue, like volver: me pruebo, te pruebas, se prueba. A pronoun replaces the item, and both short words go BEFORE the verb group: “Me lo puedo probar” (el jersey) · “Me la puedo probar” (la falda). How it fits: Es muy grande. · Son muy pequeños. · Son muy anchos. The adjective agrees with the item, not with you. Returns and exchanges. You need el recibo, and la etiqueta on the item. devolver — return the item and get your money back; cambiar — exchange it for another: “Quiero devolver este jersey.” · “¿Me lo pueden cambiar por otro número?” During sales, stores usually exchange items but don't refund them. Checkout. Pay en la caja, not to the salesperson on the floor. Common mistakes: • NOT “¿Puedo probar esta camisa?” — correct: ¿Me la puedo probar? (you try it on yourself). • NOT “¿Qué talla de zapatos tiene?” — correct: ¿Qué número tiene? • NOT “Quiero devolver esta falda por otra talla” — correct: Quiero cambiar esta falda por otra talla. • NOT “Es muy grandes” — correct: Son muy grandes.
Size: clothes and shoes

Two different words: mixing them up is the most common mistake in a store.
