Nefunguje to! What's broken and who cleans

Nefunguje to! What's broken and who cleans

Why: to tell your landlady what's broken, ask for a repair, ask about the rent, and say who does the cleaning at home. “It isn't working” is … nefunguje, Nefunguje to. “My … isn't working” is the set phrase Nefunguje mi …: the short mi (“to me”) comes second, as in líbí se mi. For machines Czech uses fungovat, not pracovat. Broken is rozbitý, agreeing with the noun: rozbitý mobil, rozbitá lampa, rozbité okno. To fix, to turn on, to turn off: opravit, zapnout, vypnout. Use them after “can / must / want”: Můžete … opravit? Musíš … vypnout. Or in the past: opravil, zapnula, vypnul. We don't say “I'll fix it tomorrow” yet. Rent: nájemné is the rent; pronajmout si is to rent: chci si pronajmout … (si comes second). Housework is in the present: uklízím, peru, myju nádobí; čistý ↔ špinavý; pořádek: you know to je v pořádku. Common mistakes: • דPočítač nepracuje” → Počítač nefunguje. • דTelevize je rozbitý” → rozbitá. • דBudu opravit topení” → Musím opravit topení.
Something isn't working

The ellipsis stands for the appliance: topení, pračka, světlo …
