I can say what I did yesterday and on Saturday, and ask the person I'm talking to: byl jsem, byla jsi, byl jste, pane…?
Co jsi dělal včera? jsem, jsi, and the past tense
Co jsi dělal včera? jsem, jsi, and the past tense
Use the past to tell what happened: včera, předevčírem (the day before yesterday), minulý týden, v sobotu, už. The form is the verb in -l (the l-form), which changes with gender and number: dělat → dělal (he), dělala (she), dělalo, dělali (we, they; women only — dělaly).
In the 1st and 2nd person it needs a short word: jsem (I), jsi (you, informal), jsme (we), jste (you, formal; you all): dělal jsem, dělala jsi. In the 3rd person there is none: Eva dělala. The short word comes second in the sentence. The negative is one word: nebyl jsem. With vy to one person, the l-form is singular, in that person's gender: Byl jste doma, pane Koláři? Byla jste v kině, paní Říhová?
One form covers “I did”, “I have done” and “I was doing”. Special forms are in the table: byl, měl, šel, jel, jedl, pil, mohl, chtěl, četl, psal, věděl; koupil, přišel. To tell things in order: nejdříve … pak / potom … nakonec. Už jsi obědval? — Ještě ne.
Common mistakes:
• דVčera byl jsem v parku” → the short word comes second: Včera jsem byl v parku.
• דJá četl knihu” → Četl jsem knihu (without jsem, people say this only in casual speech).
• דLukáš je šel” → Lukáš šel.
The past tense: dělat
jsem, jsi, jsme, jste come second; the third person has none.
