Lesson 3. Finir, partir, attendre: other verbs in the présent (present tense)

I can conjugate verbs that don't end in -er in the present tense: finir and choisir with -iss-, partir, sortir, dormir, attendre, vendre, répondre, and also lire, écrire, dire, and savoir — and say what I know how to do.

1 / 16

Not just -er: finis, pars, attends

Not just -er: finis, pars, attends

Few verbs fall outside -er, but they're everyday ones: you need them for “I'm finishing”, “the train leaves”, “I'm waiting”, “I know how to”. -ir verbs with -iss-: je finis, tu finis, il finit, nous finissons, vous finissez, ils finissent. The plural adds iss between stem and ending. Same for choisir. The partir group: je pars, tu pars, il part, nous partons, vous partez, ils partent. The singular drops the stem's last consonant. Same for sortir and dormir. -re verbs: j'attends, tu attends, il attend, nous attendons, vous attendez, ils attendent. il and elle have no ending: the stem with its silent d. Same for vendre and répondre. attendre = “wait for”, with no pour: J'attends le bus. Four special verbs: lire (je lis, nous lisons), écrire (j'écris, nous écrivons), dire (je dis, vous dites), savoir (je sais, nous savons). vous dites is like vous êtes and vous faites: only three such forms exist. savoir with an infinitive means “to know how to”: “Théo sait écrire en français”. Also with où and que: “Je sais où est la gare”, “Je sais que le cours commence à neuf heures”. Common mistakes: • NOT “nous finisons” — write two s: nous finissons. • NOT “il attende” — il and elle have no ending. • NOT “vous disez” — dire has vous dites. • NOT “je sais de lire” — no preposition. • NOT “nous partons” meaning “we sleep” — it's “we're leaving”; to sleep is dormir.
-ir verbs with -iss-

In the plural, -iss- appears between the stem and the ending.
