I can say what there is in a room and where exactly each thing is: en el salón hay un sofá — el sofá está delante de la ventana; and where I am myself — the verb estar in all persons.
What's in the room and where it is
hay ↔ está / están
Two questions: “what is here?” and “where is it?” English splits them (“there is a sofa” / “the sofa is here”); so does Spanish.
hay means “there is/are”, one form for any number: hay un sofá, hay dos sillas. After hay: un/una/unos/unas, a number, or a bare noun: ¿Hay ascensor en el edificio?
está / están (estar, “to be” in a place) are for a known thing: with el/la/los/las, mi/tu/su, este/esta, or a name. El sofá está en el salón.
For location Spanish never uses ser, even where English says “is” or “am”; use all six forms of estar (see the table), for people too: Estoy en casa. ¿Dónde estáis vosotros?
Word order: hay puts the place first (En el salón hay un sofá); está puts the thing first.
Unlike English “under”, Spanish place words end in de (see the table): debajo de la mesa. de + el = del: al lado del sofá, but al lado de la mesa — like a + el = al.
Negatives and questions: En el salón no hay ordenador. ¿Dónde está mi lámpara?
Common mistakes:
• NOT “Yo soy en casa” — correct: Yo estoy en casa.
• NOT “En la cocina está una mesa” — correct: En la cocina hay una mesa.
• NOT “El libro hay encima de la mesa” — correct: El libro está encima de la mesa.
• NOT “Hay el sofá en el salón” — correct: El sofá está en el salón.
• NOT “al lado de el sofá” — correct: al lado del sofá.
• NOT “Están dos sillas en la cocina” — correct: Hay dos sillas en la cocina.
Two questions — two words
hay answers “what is there”, está and están — “where it is”.
| Question | Word | Example |

| What's here? (several) | hay | En el salón hay dos sillas. |
| Where is it? (one) | está | El sofá está en el salón. |
| Where are they? (several) | están | Las sillas están en el salón. |
estar — “to be (somewhere)”: six forms
Every form has an accent mark except estoy and estamos: the stress falls on the ending.

| yo | estoy | Estoy en la cocina. |
| tú | estás | ¿Dónde estás, Diego? |
| él · ella · usted | está | Mi madre está en el jardín. |

| vosotros · vosotras | estáis | Vosotros estáis en el baño. |
| ellos · ellas · ustedes | están | Mis tíos están en el hotel. |
