Advice: Du solltest … — and how to praise

Advice: Du solltest … — and how to praise

In this lesson you describe a person, praise them, criticize gently, and give advice. sollte is gentle advice, English “should”: Du solltest mehr schlafen. All the forms are in the first table. The sentence bracket you know: sollte in position 2, the infinitive at the end, and NO zu before it, as in “you should sleep”. Note: the past of sollen looks the same (you've met it): Ich sollte gestern anrufen — “I was supposed to call yesterday.” You can tell it's advice from the meaning and the time: it's about today and tomorrow. Praise: Das hast du gut gemacht! Das finde ich gut. Gentle criticism: Das war nicht so gut. Das gefällt mir nicht. The phrases are in the third table. Describing a person: after sein the adjective doesn't change — Sie ist sympathisch und freundlich (sympathisch means “likable”, not “sympathetic”). Looks also go with sein. English “hair” is singular, but die Haare is plural, like die Augen: Ihre Haare sind lang. Seine Augen sind grün. Examples are in the second table. Common mistakes: • NOT “Du solltest mehr Sport zu machen” — correct: mehr Sport machen. • NOT “Du solltest schlafen mehr” — correct: mehr schlafen, the infinitive at the end. • NOT “Sie ist eine sehr nervös” — correct: Sie ist sehr nervös, no article here. • NOT “Die Haare von Lena ist lang” — Haare is plural: sind lang.
