At the restaurant: the menu, silverware, the check

In an Italian restaurant, you order course by course; the waiter asks about each. The menu goes: l'antipasto (appetizer) → il primo (pasta, rice, soup) → il secondo (meat or fish) → il contorno (side dish) → il dolce (dessert). What's missing on the table: “Manca lo zucchero” (literally “the sugar is missing”): the verb first, then the thing. Politer, as a set phrase: “Mi può portare una forchetta?” To ask for the check: “Il conto, per favore”. To ask how much, use “Quant'è?”, which you already know. Booking by phone: “È possibile prenotare un tavolo per due?” Spell out your last name (M come Milano); the table then gets a “Tavolo riservato” sign. Buono ↔ bene, like good ↔ well: buono rates food, a thing, or a place and goes after essere (La pizza è buona, Il caffè è buono, Il ristorante è buono: buona with a feminine word, buono with a masculine one); bene is about an action and goes after the verb (Marco parla bene l'italiano). Places to eat: il bar — coffee and sandwiches, la pizzeria — pizza, la trattoria and l'osteria — simple home cooking, il ristorante — a full menu. Common mistakes: • NOT “La pizza è bene” → “La pizza è buona”. • NOT “Marco parla buono l'italiano” → “…parla bene…”. • NOT “Vorrei prenoto un tavolo” → “Vorrei prenotare un tavolo”. • NOT “Manca un pizza” → “Manca una pizza”.
