I can order from an Italian menu, say what's missing on the table, ask for the check, and book a table by phone.
At the restaurant: the menu, silverware, the check
At the restaurant: the menu, silverware, the check
In an Italian restaurant, you order course by course; the waiter asks about each.
The menu goes: l'antipasto (appetizer) → il primo (pasta, rice, soup) → il secondo (meat or fish) → il contorno (side dish) → il dolce (dessert).
What's missing on the table: “Manca lo zucchero” (literally “the sugar is missing”): the verb first, then the thing. Politer, as a set phrase: “Mi può portare una forchetta?”
To ask for the check: “Il conto, per favore”. To ask how much, use “Quant'è?”, which you already know.
Booking by phone: “È possibile prenotare un tavolo per due?” Spell out your last name (M come Milano); the table then gets a “Tavolo riservato” sign.
Buono ↔ bene, like good ↔ well: buono rates food, a thing, or a place and goes after essere (La pizza è buona, Il caffè è buono, Il ristorante è buono: buona with a feminine word, buono with a masculine one); bene is about an action and goes after the verb (Marco parla bene l'italiano).
Places to eat: il bar — coffee and sandwiches, la pizzeria — pizza, la trattoria and l'osteria — simple home cooking, il ristorante — a full menu.
Common mistakes:
• NOT “La pizza è bene” → “La pizza è buona”.
• NOT “Marco parla buono l'italiano” → “…parla bene…”.
• NOT “Vorrei prenoto un tavolo” → “Vorrei prenotare un tavolo”.
• NOT “Manca un pizza” → “Manca una pizza”.
The order of an Italian menu
The waiter will ask about each part in turn.
| Part of the menu | Translation | When it's served |
|---|---|---|
| l'antipasto | appetizer | first, to whet the appetite |
| il primo | first course (pasta, risotto, soup) | after the appetizer |
| il secondo | main course (meat or fish) | the main dish of the meal |
| il contorno | side dish | with the main course |
| il dolce | dessert | at the very end |
Buono vs. bene
Buono rates food, a thing, or a place; bene is about how something is done.
| Word | When | Example |
|---|---|---|
| buono / buona | about food, a thing, or a place, after essere | La pizza è buona. Il caffè è buono. Il ristorante è buono. |
| bene | about an action, after the verb | Marco parla bene l'italiano. |
