Wohnung mieten: the viewing, the money, the lease

Wohnung mieten: the viewing, the money, the lease

Renting takes three steps: see the apartment (die Besichtigung), ask about the money, sign the lease and move in. With the landlord, use Sie. Who does what (first table): English “rent” is both; German has two verbs: der Vermieter vermietet die Wohnung — rents it out; der Mieter mietet sie — rents it. The prefix ver- makes the difference. What it costs (second table): every month, die Miete and die Nebenkosten (water, heating, trash pickup); once, on moving in, die Kaution, usually two months' rent, returned when you move out. Ask: Wie hoch ist die Miete? Rent is hoch; an apartment is teuer. The apartment: size in square meters (Die Wohnung hat vier Zimmer und siebzig Quadratmeter.); the floor, im Erdgeschoss (US first floor) or im ersten Stock (US second floor); furniture, eine möblierte Wohnung; if not: Die Wohnung ist nicht möbliert. Storage: im Keller. The viewing and the lease: Ich interessiere mich für die Wohnung. Wann kann ich die Wohnung sehen? Sign the lease before moving in: Am Freitag unterschreiben wir den Mietvertrag. The prefix goes to the end: Am ersten Mai ziehe ich ein. Common mistakes: • NOT “Ich vermiete eine Wohnung” as the tenant → Ich miete eine Wohnung.
Who does what

The stem is the same; the prefix ver- reverses the role.
