Lesson 6. Ուղիղ գնացեք — directions and the imperative

I can ask for and give directions: Գնացեք ուղիղ, թեքվեք ձախ, անցեք փողոցը — and I won't mix up the form for a friend and the formal form.

1 / 18

Requests and directions: նստիր — նստեք

Requests and directions: նստիր — նստեք

What for: to ask for something, make an offer, and give directions. This is the imperative. English has one form for everyone (“Sit down”); Armenian has one for a friend (դու) and another for formal speech or several people (դուք). Verbs in -ել take -իր and -եք: նստել → նստիր, նստեք; թեքվել → թեքվիր, թեքվեք. Verbs in -ալ take -ա and -ացեք: գնալ → գնա, գնացեք; կարդալ → կարդա, կարդացեք. Six verbs are learned as pairs (the second table): անցիր / անցեք, արի / եկեք, տուր / տվեք, ասա / ասացեք, բեր / բերեք, վերցրու / վերցրեք. The same with ցույց տուր / ցույց տվեք. In the formal form, -ել verbs can also take the longer -եցեք: ներեցեք, նստեցեք. Phrases you know use the same forms: Ներեցեք, Կրկնեք, Դանդաղ խոսեք. Directions (to a friend): Գնա ուղիղ մինչև շուկա. Հետո թեքվիր ձախ. Անցիր հրապարակը. The mark ՛ over the stressed vowel shows a request, an order, or calling someone: Սպասի՛ր։ Նարե՛, արի։ You don't have to type it. Written ջ, heard [tʃʰ]: աջ. Written գ, heard [kʰ]: օգնել. Common mistakes: • NOT “Տիկին Գրիգորյան, նայիր” → նայեք (formal). • NOT “անցնիր”, “վերցնիր” → անցիր, վերցրու. • NOT “գալիր”, “տալիր” → արի, տուր.
Requests: two kinds

Verbs in -ել take -իր and -եք; verbs in -ալ take -ա and -ացեք.
