I can say whose something is — Асхаттың кітабы, досымның аты, бөлімнің бастығы — and ask: Бұл кімнің сөмкесі?
Whose? The genitive
Whose? The genitive
Why: to say whose something is — “Askhat's book”, “my friend's name”.
English marks only the owner, with 's; Kazakh puts an ending on both words. The owner takes the genitive ending, and the thing takes the “his / her” ending: Асхаттың кітабы, Динараның сөмкесі. The owner always comes first, as in “Askhat's book” — never as in “the book of Askhat”. The question is кімнің? “whose?”.
The last sound of the word picks the form, and vowel harmony picks the vowel:
• -ның / -нің — after vowels and м, н, ң: баланың, бөлімнің;
• -дың / -дің — after з, ж, р, л, й, у: қыздың, әйелдің;
• -тың / -тің — after voiceless consonants and б, в, г, д: достың, жігіттің.
Менің, сенің, сіздің, оның are genitive forms too: мен → менің.
After “my, your”, the same rule: досым → досымның аты “my friend's name”.
Common mistakes:
• ×Асхат кітап, ×Асхаттың кітап → Асхаттың кітабы;
• ×кітабы Асхаттың → Асхаттың кітабы.
The genitive: three rows
The hard or the soft form: the last syllable of the word decides.
| After | hard word | soft word |
|---|---|---|
| after vowels and м, н, ң | баланың, маманның | әженің, бөлімнің |
| after з, ж, р, л, й, у | қыздың, Санжардың | дәрігердің, әйелдің |
| after voiceless consonants and б, в, г, д | достың, бастықтың | жігіттің, әріптестің |
Whose — what: two endings
The owner always comes first.
| Whose (the owner) | What (with the “his / her” ending) |
|---|---|
| Асхаттың | кітабы |
| Динараның | сөмкесі |
| досымның | аты |
| кімнің? | үйі? |
