I can talk about the past with any verb I know: put -er and -ir verbs in the past tense, tell comi from comeu, and ask O que é que comeste ontem?
Yesterday: -er and -ir verbs
Yesterday: -er and -ir verbs
The time expressions are the same as in the last lesson: ontem, ontem de manhã, na semana passada, no mês passado. Only the verb endings change.
Two conjugations, one table. -er verbs: i, este, eu, emos, eram. -ir verbs: i, iste, iu, imos, iram.
Only the eu form is the same: comi, abri. In the others the vowel of the ending differs, most clearly in the third person: comeu — abriu.
The nós form is the same as in the present: comemos, abrimos. The time expression shows whether it's yesterday or always: Ontem comemos em casa.
ler and ouvir behave like regular verbs in the past: li, leste, leu; ouvi, ouviste, ouviu.
Questions work as always, with no “did”: O que é que comeste ontem? The word order doesn't change. Negative: não before the verb.
Common mistakes:
• NOT “Ontem eu comeu em casa” — Ontem comi em casa.
• NOT “A Inês abreu a janela” — A Inês abriu a janela.
• NOT “Ele bebiu um café” — Ele bebeu um café.
• NOT “No mês passado nós recebe uma carta” — nós recebemos.
