The bottom letter: seven sounds

A syllable can end in a consonant. It is written at the bottom of the block and called a 받침 (a final consonant): 방 “room”, 책 “book”. Type it right after the vowel; the keyboard moves it down by itself. ㅆ and ㄲ take Shift. 16 letters can stand at the bottom, but they make only seven sounds: ㄱ ㄴ ㄷ ㄹ ㅁ ㅂ ㅇ. ㅋ and ㄲ sound like [ㄱ]; ㅅ, ㅆ, ㅈ, ㅊ, ㅌ, ㅎ like [ㄷ]: 옷 “clothes” [옫], never “OHSS”; 꽃 “flower” [꼳]; ㅍ like [ㅂ]. See the table. A final sound is unreleased: the lips or the tongue close, and the sound stops. 입 “mouth”: the lips close, and that's all, like the p of “stop” held in, with no puff and no vowel after it. ㅇ at the bottom is nasal, the ng of “sing” with no g after it: 강 “river”. At the start of a syllable ㅇ is silent; at the bottom it sounds. ㄹ at the bottom is a clear l, as in “leaf”, never the dark l of “full”: 말 “word”. Sometimes there are two letters at the bottom but one sound: 넓다 “wide” [널따], 읽다 “to read” [익따] (why [따]: lesson 6). For now we only recognize such words, not write them. Common mistakes: • NOT 밥 (rice) with a vowel after the p, “BAH-puh” — the sound stops on closed lips. • NOT a silent ㅇ at the bottom — at the bottom it sounds, through the nose. • NOT reading both bottom letters in 없다 “to not be there” — only one sounds: [업따].
