Lesson 4. Anlamıyorum. Geliyor musun?: negatives and questions in the present tense

I can say what I don't do and don't understand — Anlamıyorum, Bilmiyorum — and ask “Are you coming?” and “Do you speak Russian?” — Geliyor musun? Rusça konuşuyor musunuz?

1 / 16

“I don't” and “do you?”: -mıyor and mu

“I don't” and “do you?”: -mıyor and mu

Why: to say what you don't do and don't understand, and to ask “are you coming?”. “Not”: after the stem put -mıyor, -miyor, -muyor or -müyor, by vowel harmony (see the table): yapmıyorum “I don't do it”, gelmiyorum, konuşmuyorum, görmüyorum. The stem stays as it is: beklemiyorum, yemiyorum; gitmek gives gitmiyor: the t stays, compare gidiyor. The stress is on the syllable before -mı: in gelmiyorum it's gel. English adds “don't”; Turkish puts “not” inside the verb. Questions: no “do” and no change of word order. After -yor write the separate word mu, and the personal ending moves onto it: • Geliyor muyum? Geliyor musun? Geliyor mu? • Geliyor muyuz? Geliyor musunuz? Geliyorlar mı? With onlar the order differs: -lar first, then mı. With a question word there is no mu: Ne arıyorsun? Answers: Evet, geliyorum. — Hayır, gelmiyorum. The familiar Türkçe biliyorum / bilmiyorum works the same way: bilmek is “to know” and “to know how”. “I want something”: the thing + istiyorum: Kalem istiyorum. Common mistakes: • NOT “geliyormusun” → geliyor musun • NOT “geliyorsun mu” → geliyor musun • NOT “Ben gelmiyor” → Ben gelmiyorum
The negative in the present tense: -mıyor, -miyor, -muyor, -müyor

The stem doesn't change; before -yor add mı / mi / mu / mü, by the last vowel of the stem.
