How things used to be

Pretérito imperfecto

The imperfect (pretérito imperfecto) is the tense of past habits and settings: not “what happened” but “what usually happened” and “what things were like” — someone's age, the weather, where people lived, what they did every day. A one-time event takes another tense. English often uses “used to” here (I used to live → vivía; never usar). Spanish needs only the ending. Time expressions: antes, siempre, a menudo, todos los días, todos los veranos, de pequeño, cuando era niño. The endings are in the first table. For -ar verbs they start with -ab-: hablaba. The -er and -ir verbs share endings that start with -í-: comía, vivía. The yo and él forms are the same (yo hablaba, él hablaba): the subject shows who it is. Only three verbs are irregular (second table): ir, ser, ver. The past of hay is había, one form for both “there was” and “there were”: había un cine, había dos cines. Don't skip the accent mark: in -ía it splits the vowels into two syllables (co-mí-a), and in -ábamos it shows the stress (í-ba-mos). Common mistakes: • NOT “Antes trabajo en un bar” — correct: Antes trabajaba en un bar. • NOT “Todos los veranos fuimos al pueblo” (about a habit) — correct: íbamos al pueblo. • NOT “Cuando iba pequeño” — correct: Cuando era pequeño. • NOT “En mi calle habían tres tiendas” — correct: había tres tiendas.
Pretérito imperfecto (the imperfect): regular verbs

-er and -ir verbs have the same endings. The yo and él forms are the same.
