Bigger, smaller, cheapest of all

Bigger, smaller, cheapest of all

You compare when you pick an apartment, a hotel, or something to buy. At this level the comparison comes AFTER sein: Das Zimmer ist heller. The form before a noun (das hellere Zimmer) comes at the next level. Three forms, in the first table: billig, billiger, am billigsten. Long words take -er too, never “mehr”: bequemer (more comfortable). als compares two things, like “than”: Die Küche ist kleiner als das Wohnzimmer. Equal things: so … wie (“as … as”): Mein Zimmer ist so groß wie dein Zimmer. Spelling: after t, d, s, ß, z the superlative adds e: leicht — am leichtesten, laut — am lautesten. In dunkel and teuer the e drops out instead: dunkel — dunkler, teuer — teurer. Short words with a, o, u often take an umlaut: alt — älter, groß — größer, jung — jünger, lang — länger, warm — wärmer, kalt — kälter; hoch — höher also loses the c. The forms are in the second table. Special forms, in the third table: gut, gern, and viel change completely, like good — better — best. wenig, their opposite, follows the usual rule: wenig — weniger — am wenigsten. Common mistakes: • NOT “Das Sofa ist mehr bequem” — correct: bequemer. • NOT “Die Küche ist kleiner dann das Bad” — “than” is als. • NOT “Die Küche ist kleiner wie das Bad” — used in everyday speech, not the norm: kleiner als. • NOT “Dieses Buch ist am gutsten” — correct: am besten.
