I can talk about my weekend in three or four sentences, linking them with まず, それから, それに, and でも, and answer the question 「しゅうまつはなにをしましたか」.
Period, linking word, new sentence
Period, linking word, new sentence
This lesson: how to talk about your weekend in three or four sentences, not one.
The main rule: period, linking word, new sentence. Unlike English “but” or “and”, the linking word doesn't join two clauses: it starts the next sentence, right after 。.
Four linking words:
• それから — “then, after that”: the next action in time.
• あと — “also”: adds one more action or thing, usually with も.
• それに — “besides”: adds one more judgment in the same direction, good after good or bad after bad (… でした after …
• でも — “but”: the opposite.
The story plan is in the table: まず … 。 。 。 With it, answering しゅうまつはなにをしましたか is easy. The last sentence can start with さいごに, a middle one with つぎに (“next”) instead of それから.
When someone tells you their story, answer そうですか — “I see.”
Common mistakes:
• NOT かいものをしました、それから、えいがをみました — a period goes before the linking word.
それに、つまらなかったです — それに adds a judgment in the same direction; here it's でも.
あと、やすかったです → それに、やすかったです — あと adds an action or a thing; a judgment takes それに.
• NOT でも、それから、うみへいきました — never two linking words in a row.
Four linking words
A linking word starts a new sentence: the period 。 comes before it, and the comma 、 after it.
| Linking word | What it does | Example |
|---|---|---|
| あと | “also”: one more fact | すしをたべました。 |
| それに | “besides”: another point in the same direction | へやはひろかったです。
