I can say what the weather is like today and in each season, and keep up a short conversation about the weather with a neighbor or a coworker.
Seasons and weather: 「いい天気ですね」
Seasons and weather: 「いい天気ですね」
With a neighbor, a coworker in the elevator, or your landlord, small talk almost always starts with the weather: in Japan it's the safest topic. The seasons and their months are in the first table.
To say what the weather is like, use a noun: 「今日(きょう)は曇り(くもり)です。」 English needs “it” (“It's cloudy”); Japanese needs nothing. Rain and snow take the verb 降ります(ふります) with the particle が: 「雨(あめ)が降ります。」 — about tomorrow or in general; 「雪(ゆき)が降りました。」 — about yesterday. How to say “it's raining right now” comes at the next level.
The weather adjectives are the familiar 暑い(あつい) and 寒い(さむい) and the new 暖かい(あたたかい) and 涼しい(すずしい). All four are い-adjectives, with the same forms as 大きい(おおきい): あたたかくないです, すずしくないです, さむかったです, すずしくなかったです.
Small talk: 「いい天気(てんき)ですね。」 — 「そうですね。」 The particle ね invites the other person to agree. It's not a question: you answer by agreeing, not with “yes” or “no”. A question with か gets はい or いいえ.
Clothes for the weather: コート, 帽子(ぼうし), 手袋(てぶくろ); you already know 傘(かさ), umbrella.
Common mistakes:
• NOT 雨をふります → 雨が降ります
• NOT あたたかいじゃないです → あたたかくないです
• NOT いいてんきだですね → いい天気ですね
The four seasons
The months shown apply to most of Japan, including Tokyo.
| Season | Months | What the weather is like |
|---|---|---|
| 春(はる) | 3–5月 | 暖かい(あたたかい) |
| 夏(なつ) | 6–8月 | 暑い(あつい) |
| 秋(あき) | 9–11月 | 涼しい(すずしい) |
| 冬(ふゆ) | 12–2月 | 寒い(さむい) |
Talking about the weather
Answer ね by agreeing; answer か with “yes” or “no.”
| What you hear | What you answer | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| いい天気(てんき)ですね。 | そうですね。 | you're invited to agree — you agree |
| さむいですね。 | そうですね。 | agreement again |
| あしたはあめですか。 | はい、あめです。 | it's a question — answer はい or いいえ |
