Lesson 2. Polite on the phone: Könnten Sie …? Würden Sie …?

I can make polite requests on the phone and at work — to put someone through, call back, repeat, or wait — and answer a call politely myself.

A polite request: Könnten Sie …?

A polite request: Könnten Sie …?

On the phone and at work, requests are softened. Können Sie …? is neutral; Könnten Sie …? is polite, and it's what you say to a customer, a stranger, or your boss — like English “Could you …?”. You already know the forms: könnte, würde, hätte, wäre. What's new is the question with them and the sentence bracket: the conjugated verb in position 2, the infinitive at the very end: Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen? Würden Sie bitte kurz warten? bitte comes after the subject, a pronoun, or an object — before the infinitive, not at the end like English “please”: Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen? Würden Sie die Adresse bitte wiederholen? You can soften a statement too: Ich hätte eine Frage. Es geht um die Rechnung. Replying to a request: Gern. · Einen Moment, bitte. · Es tut mir leid, Herr Becker ist gerade nicht da. Kann ich etwas ausrichten? In the accusative and the dative, Herr becomes Herrn: Würden Sie Herrn Becker anrufen? It's the only such form in this module. Common mistakes: • NOT “Könnten Sie helfen mir?” → Könnten Sie mir helfen? • NOT “Würden Sie bitte anrufen Frau Fischer?” → Würden Sie bitte Frau Fischer anrufen? • NOT “Würde Sie kurz warten?” → Würden Sie kurz warten? • NOT “Ich habe eine Frage, bitte” → Ich hätte eine Frage. • NOT “Könnten Sie Herr Becker verbinden?” → Könnten Sie mich mit Herrn Becker verbinden?
