Lesson 5. Գրքեր, տներ, մարդիկ — the plural

I can talk about one and more than one: գիրք — գրքեր, ծաղիկ — ծաղիկներ, մարդ — մարդիկ; put the article after the ending and keep the word unchanged after a number.

More than one: -եր and -ներ

What for: to talk about more than one: books, houses, friends. This is the plural. Count the syllables: • a short word, one syllable — -եր: դասեր, տառեր; • two syllables or more — -ներ: քաղաքներ, մեքենաներ. A hidden syllable can come at the start of a word: in գրիչ you hear a short vowel between գ and ր that isn't written. That makes two syllables, so գրիչներ. The vowel drops: գիրք → գրքեր, տուն → տներ, շուն → շներ. Remember: լեռներ, թոռներ and two more words in the table are short but take -ներ. Special forms: մարդ → մարդիկ (written դ, heard [tʰ]), կին → կանայք. Common mistakes: • NOT “քաղաքեր” → քաղաքներ. • NOT “գիրքեր” → գրքեր.

The article, “these”, and “all”
The article comes after the plural ending: դասերը; before the linking verb, դասերն են։ -ս and -դ go in the same place: դասերս, “my lessons”. For “these are” or “those are”: սրանք, դրանք, նրանք, with the linking verb են: Սրանք գրքեր են։ բոլոր (“all”) + a plural noun with the article: բոլոր քաղաքները. After a number, քանի՞ and մի քանի the noun still doesn't change, unlike English “two books”: երկու գիրք, մի քանի դաս. After շատ (“many”) both are fine: շատ գիրք, շատ գրքեր. Common mistakes: • NOT “երկու գրքեր” → երկու գիրք. • NOT “Սա գրքեր են” → Սրանք գրքեր են։
