Lesson 3. Imparfait: description and background

I can describe the past: what the house was like, what we did every day, and what was going on around us — nous habitions, il faisait beau, il y avait un jardin.

1 / 15

Imparfait: what things were like

Imparfait: what things were like

The imparfait (the past tense for descriptions, habits, and background: “was doing”, “used to do”) answers the question “what was it like?”: it describes a place or a person, a habit, or the background against which something happened. Time expressions of the imparfait: avant, autrefois, à cette époque, tous les jours, souvent, d'habitude, quand j'étais petit. Form: take the nous form of the present tense (présent), drop -ons, and add the endings -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient. Nous écrivons — j'écrivais. Nous dormons — il dormait. Nous vendons — vous vendiez. There is one exception, être: j'étais, tu étais, il était, nous étions, vous étiez, ils étaient. Three background forms come up most often: il faisait beau, il y avait, c'était. English “used to live”, “was living”, and often a plain “lived” are all the imparfait in French: nous habitions. Common mistakes: • NOT “je prendais” — the stem comes from nous prenons: je prenais. • NOT “nous étaions” — nous étions. • NOT “il avait beau” — for the weather (“it was nice”), say il faisait beau. • NOT “je etais” — élision is required: j'étais.
When to use the imparfait

One tense, three jobs: describing, talking about habits, setting the background.
