Breakdown: what happens and what it means

Understand the ending: how his name gives Haku back his memory, how Sen passes the final test, and why the film has no clear-cut villain.

The name that saves everything

Sen remembers — and frees herself and Haku

Haku recovers and, now a dragon, flies Sen back. In flight she suddenly remembers: as a little girl she fell into the Kohaku River and didn't drown — the river carried her to shore. That river is gone, filled in and built over. Now it all fits: Haku is the spirit of the Kohaku River. Sen says his true name, Nigihayami Kohakunushi. It gives Haku back his memory and freedom: he is no longer Yubaba's slave. The name motif comes full circle: to say your true name is to get yourself back. In the bathhouse, a final test awaits Sen. Yubaba agrees to let her go with her parents if Sen passes a test: in a row of pigs, she must pick out her father and mother. Sen looks closely and calmly answers that her parents are NOT here — not one of the pigs. And she's right! That is the correct answer: the test is whether she remembers her real parents and trusts herself. The contract is canceled. Haku takes Sen to the edge of the spirit world, promises they will meet again, and asks her not to look back. Sen returns through the tunnel to her parents, human again and remembering nothing. They get into their dusty car and drive away. Chihiro has made her journey — and come back a different person.
