I can say what I do and don't do with verbs in -em, -iem, -ujem (píšem, rozumiem, pracujem), write ne- as one word with the verb, and ask prečo?
Píšem, pracujem, rozumiem — and ne-
Píšem, pracujem, rozumiem — and ne-
Why: now you know the main present-tense types and can say what you do and don't do with verbs of these types.
-ovať → -ujem: pracovať → pracujem, pracuješ, pracuje, pracujeme, pracujete, pracujú. Every verb in -ovať works this way.
rozumieť has its own forms; learn them: rozumiem, rozumieš, rozumie… The oni form is rozumejú; not every verb in -ieť goes like this: vidieť → vidím.
písať → píšem, píšeš, píše… The oni form is píšu: s changes to š; learn these forms.
False friend: lekcia is a lesson (in a textbook or a course), not a lecture; a lecture is prednáška.
Unlike English “not”, Slovak ne joins the verb: nepíšem, nerozumiem, nemám. Only byť keeps nie as a separate word: nie som, nie je.
The stress moves to ne-: in nepíšem the stressed syllable is ne-.
Why? is prečo? Answer with a plain sentence: Prečo nepíšeš? — Nemám pero.
Common mistakes:
• × ne píšem → nepíšem
• × nie pracujem → nepracujem
• × nieje → nie je
Present tense: -ujem, -iem, -em
All verbs in -ovať go like pracovať. Písať: learn it by heart.
| Who | -ujem: pracovať | -iem: rozumieť | -em: písať |
|---|---|---|---|
| ja | pracujem | rozumiem | píšem |
| ty | pracuješ | rozumieš | píšeš |
| on, ona | pracuje | rozumie | píše |
| my | pracujeme | rozumieme | píšeme |
| vy | pracujete | rozumiete | píšete |
| oni | pracujú | rozumejú | píšu |
Ne- as one word, nie as two
With a verb, “not” (ne-) joins the verb as one word; with byť it is a separate word, nie.
| Affirmative | Negative | How it's written |
|---|---|---|
| robím | nerobím | as one word |
| mám | nemám | as one word |
| pracujem | nepracujem | as one word |
| som | nie som | as two words |
| je | nie je | as two words |
