Lesson 4. Öğrenci misiniz? — Hayır, değilim: questions with mı and the negative değil
I can ask “are you a student? are you tired?”, answer “yes” or “no, I'm not…”, and say what I'm like and what he or she is like: yorgunum, hazır değilim, O nasıl?
Mı and değil: questions and “not”
Mı and değil: questions and “not”
Why: to ask “are you a student? are you tired?”, answer “yes” or “no”, and say what you are not.
English turns words around or adds “do”. Turkish keeps the order and adds the particle mı, mi, mu or mü (a separate little word), its vowel chosen by the last vowel of the word before it. The personal ending moves onto it: Öğrenci misin? Yorgun musunuz? Hazır mıyız? He, she and they get just the particle: O doktor mu? All the forms are in the table.
“Not” is the word değil, after what it negates, never before it; the personal ending goes on it: değilim, değilsin, değil, değiliz, değilsiniz. Answers: Evet, öğrenciyim. Hayır, değilim.
Değil mi? at the end is the English tag “isn't it? aren't you?”: Yorgunsun, değil mi?
With a question word (ne, kim, nasıl) there is no particle. Nasıl? — “how? what is … like?”: O nasıl? — Yorgun. Çok — “very”, ama — “but”.
The particle is unstressed: the voice rises on the syllable before it.
Common mistakes:
• NOT “öğrencimisin” → öğrenci misin
• NOT “Ben değil öğrenci” → Ben öğrenci değilim
• NOT “Sen öğrencisin mi?” → Sen öğrenci misin?
• NOT “Nasıl mısın?” → Nasılsın?
One word, three sentences
“Not” is the word değil after the word; a question is a particle after the word. The personal ending moves onto them.
| Who | + | − | ? |
|---|---|---|---|
| ben | yorgunum | yorgun değilim | yorgun muyum? |
| sen | yorgunsun | yorgun değilsin | yorgun musun? |
| o | yorgun | yorgun değil | yorgun mu? |
| biz | yorgunuz | yorgun değiliz | yorgun muyuz? |
| siz | yorgunsunuz | yorgun değilsiniz | yorgun musunuz? |
| onlar | yorgun | yorgun değil | yorgun mu? |
The particle: which vowel
The last vowel of the word before it chooses the particle's vowel; the personal ending goes on the particle.
| The last vowel | Particle | ben · sen | biz · siz | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| a, ı | mı | mıyım · mısın | mıyız · mısınız | hasta mı? |
| e, i | mi | miyim · misin | miyiz · misiniz | iyi mi? |
| o, u | mu | muyum · musun | muyuz · musunuz | yorgun mu? |
| ö, ü | mü | müyüm · müsün | müyüz · müsünüz | üzgün mü? |
