I can say what I didn't do and ask the other person: Gittin mi? Neden gelmedin? — and explain why: Çünkü çok yoruldum.

“I didn't” and “did you?”

“I didn't” and “did you?”

Why: to say what you didn't do and to ask whether someone did something. Negative: stem + -ma / -me + -dı + personal ending. After -ma it is always d, so there are only two forms: almadım, gelmedim, okumadın, görmedik, gitmediniz. There is no separate “didn't”: the negative is inside the verb. Question: first the personal ending, then mı as a separate word: Geldin mi? Aldınız mı? Okudun mu? Gördün mü? No “did” and no change of word order. In the present it was the other way round (Geliyor musun? — the ending is on the particle); here the ending stays on the verb. Answer with the verb: Aldın mı? — Evet, aldım. / Hayır, almadım. “Why?” is neden (in conversation also niçin, niye). The answer starts with çünkü “because”: Neden yazmadın? — Çünkü telefonum evde. With a question word you don't need mı. Three more words for telling a story: hâlâ “still”, yine “again”, fakat “but” (like ama, a little more formal). Common mistakes: • ×gitti misin → gittin mi; • ×geldinmi → geldin mi (the particle is a separate word); • ×gelmadım → gelmedim; • תehir beğendim → Şehri beğendim (the liked thing takes -i).
The past tense: affirmative, negative, question

The particle changes with the last vowel: aldın mı · geldin mi · okudun mu · gördün mü.
