I can say what I did and didn't do yesterday and last week, and say “nothing” and “nowhere”.
What happened yesterday
What happened yesterday
To say what you did yesterday or on the weekend, name the time first, then the action.
You already know the words for the past: きのう, おととい, せんしゅう, せんげつ, きょねん, しゅうまつ. One is new, まえ “ago”: 3日前(みっかまえ) — three days ago, 2年前(にねんまえ) — two years ago.
The form: only the ending of the verb changes. ます → ました, ません → ませんでした. A question ends in ましたか: きのう、なにをしましたか. The form is the same for everyone: “I”, “he”, and “we”. A time word alone doesn't make the verb past: with きのう you still need ました.
きのう、ほんをよみました is “I read a book yesterday”: ました covers both English “did” and “have done”.
なにも “nothing” and どこにも “nowhere” go only with a negative verb: なにもしませんでした, どこにもいきませんでした. English “I ate nothing” has a positive verb; Japanese doesn't.
Common mistakes:
• NOT きのう、えいがをみます → きのう、えいがをみました.
• NOT なにもたべました → なにもたべませんでした.
• NOT いきませんました → いきませんでした.
Words about the past
Except for まえ, you know all these words from module 4. The time word goes at the beginning.
| Word | When |
|---|---|
| きのう | yesterday |
| おととい | the day before yesterday |
| せんしゅう | last week |
| せんげつ | last month |
| きょねん | last year |
| しゅうまつ | on the weekend |
| 3日前(みっかまえ) | three days ago |
| 2年前(にねんまえ) | two years ago |
The verb: now and in the past
Only the ending after the stem changes; the form is the same for every person.
| I do | I don't | I did | I didn't |
|---|---|---|---|
| みます | みません | みました | みませんでした |
| かいます | かいません | かいました | かいませんでした |
| します | しません | しました | しませんでした |
