What time it is and at what time

What time it is and at what time

Why: to ask and tell the time and to talk about your day. What time is it: Сағат неше? — Сағат үш. For “half past”, the word жарым “and a half” comes after the hour that has already struck: сегіз жарым is 8:30, the same hour as in English “half past eight”. You can also say it as on a digital clock: сегіз отыз. “At three” takes the same ending as “where”: сағат үште, жетіде, сегіз жарымда. The question is Сағат нешеде? “At what time?”. Here сағат онда means “at ten”, not “there”. The times of day are set words: таңертең, күндіз, түсте, кешке, түнде. My day: the time comes before the verb, not after it as in English: Мен сағат жетіде оянамын. Watch out: • кеш is both “evening” and “late”: қайырлы кеш, кеш ұйықтаймын; • жарты is “half” on its own: жарты сағат “half an hour”; жарым is “and a half” after a number. Common mistakes: • 8:30 — ×тоғыз жарым → сегіз жарым; • ×үште сағат → сағат үште.
What time it is and at what time

Жарым comes after the hour that has already begun: сегіз жарым is 8:30.
