Lesson 5. Impératif (the imperative): directions and invitations

I can give directions and invite someone: give a command with tu, with vous, and with “let's”, tell someone not to do something, and politely accept or decline.

Say it directly: tourne, tournons, tournez

To give directions, tell someone what to do, or invite someone over, French uses the imperative (command form). It has three forms: tu, nous, and vous. Tourne ! Tournons ! Tournez ! It's the présent without the pronoun: the subject is neither written nor said. The nous form means “let's”: Tournons ! — “Let's turn!” There's no word for “let”. In -er verbs the tu form drops the s: tu tournes — Tourne ! The same with aller: tu vas — Va ! Four verbs have special forms: être — sois, soyons, soyez; avoir — aie, ayons, ayez; aller — va, allons, allez; venir — viens, venons, venez. All the forms are in the table. Negative command: ne (n') and pas go around the verb, while English puts “Don't” first. Ne traverse pas ici ! N'ayez pas peur ! To be polite, use the vous form plus s'il vous plaît; with tu, it's s'il te plaît. An invitation and the answer: Viens chez moi ! — D'accord ! or Désolé, je ne peux pas. Common mistakes: • NOT “Tu manges maintenant !” as a command — Mange maintenant ! • NOT “Invites Sophie !” — Invite Sophie ! The tu form has no -s. • NOT “Laissez-nous aller !” — Allons-y ! • NOT “Ne pas prenez le métro !” — Ne prenez pas le métro ! • NOT “Vous mangez avec nous !” as an invitation — Mangez avec nous !
The imperative: three forms

It's the présent without the pronoun; in -er verbs and aller, the tu form drops the -s.
