Отрицательная инверсия
Когда предложение начинается с отрицательного или ограничительного выражения (never — никогда, rarely / seldom — редко, hardly / scarcely — едва, no sooner — не успел, not only — не только, little — мало, едва, nowhere — нигде, at no time — ни разу), порядок слов меняется как в вопросе: вспомогательный глагол ставится перед подлежащим. Сравните: 'I have never seen such a mess' и 'Never have I seen such a mess'. Если в предложении есть модальный глагол, вперёд выносится он сам: 'Under no circumstances can the file leave the building', 'On no account may staff share client data'. Конструкция 'Not only... but also...' усиливает перечисление: 'Not only did she sing, but she also played the piano'. Со связкой времён употребляется 'Hardly had I arrived when the phone rang' и 'Scarcely had we sat down when it started raining'. Такая инверсия звучит официально и эмфатично, поэтому уместна в письменной и формальной речи. Частая ошибка — оставить обычный порядок слов после наречия: NOT 'Never I have seen such a mess', верно 'Never have I seen such a mess'. Ещё одна ошибка — добавить 'did' и при этом не поставить глагол в начальную форму: NOT 'Not only she did sing', верно 'Not only did she sing'. После 'hardly' и 'scarcely' используется 'when', а не 'than': NOT 'Hardly had I arrived than the phone rang', верно 'Hardly had I arrived when the phone rang'.
Отрицательная инверсия: что встаёт перед подлежащим
В простом времени появляется do / does / did, и смысловой глагол уходит в базовую форму: Rarely does a supplier admit an error.
